My Review of Amelie

This was a fantastic film. And after seeing Amelie, I can tell you that I have two wishes.

Firstly, I wish that Amelie (the main character) was my girlfriend. She’s pretty, smart and weird, but in a sweet, cute way. Just look at this clip. Quinze must be the sexiest number ever.

My other wish after watching this movie is that I had made it. I wish I could make a movie this uncynical and sweet. I wish I could make a film that is this funny and joyful. I wish I could make a movie this well-directed and good-looking. I wish I could make a film this well-written and well-acted. I wish I could make this film, since, if you ask me, it is the best film made this century. Above all, I wish I could make a film with this much charm.

Amelie pretty much oozes charm. It makes me want to hug the main character, and then hug the film.

In case you don’t know, this is a French film about a girl called, well, Amelie. When she was little, she wished her father would touch her- the closest she ever got was his monthly check-up (her father was a doctor). The fact that he was touching her made her heart beat very fast, which convinced her father that she had a heart condition. Thus, she was home-schooled. Her mother was killed later when a suicidal woman jumped from a building- and landed on her.

Now Amelie works at a resteraunt. She is twenty-three years old. One day she finds a box that used to belong to the old occupant of her apartment, so she decides to return it to him. When she does, she feels happy. So she sets out to reward all the unhappy people around her by doing small things.

But then she sees Nino, and falls in love. Can she make herself happy as well?

This film is very quirky, and very beautiful. It’s set in Paris and everything is gorgeous, and there is a real rythm to the camera movements.

And the acting… Apparently the director wanted a British actress such as Emily Watson for the role of Amelie, but he ended up casting unknown Audrey Tautou. And Tautou is perfect in it. I doubt the film would be as good without her.

Really, you have to watch this film to understand it. It’s sweet and charming, and definite treasure. Highly reccomended.
